Thanks Mark. I've also received other suggestions, and I'll pass them on here:
(1) Use the instance name ORCL
(2) Oracle Tech Support says (finally! -- did they say "same day" or "some
day" callback?) to use the Bequeath option (to bypass network) when setting
up the database name.
