The 1997 Developers Competition

                       Yes, It's Back!

What's back? The biggest little software developers competition the world has ever seen, that's what. At the 1997 Developers Competition, the best and the brightest will be giving it their all to prove that they are the best software developers on the planet. This year's competition will be held October 7th-9th here in Durham, North Carolina. This is the same competition that has attracted over 325 teams from 16 countries over the past 6 years. If you haven't heard about it before, it's time you did. And if you think you are a hotshot developer, this is the place to be in October!

                     How Does It Work?

Each year a charitable organization that needs a custom application is chosen to be the beneficiary of the event. Contestants, competing in teams of one or two people, come to Durham and build a typical business application for that organization based on specifications detailing its real life problem. Competitors may use any product on any platform to attack the problem. The resulting applications are judged by industry experts and the winners split $10,000 in cash. Typically, another $500,000 of sponsor-donated software products is also distibuted among the contestants. Previous beneficiaries of the competitions have included a Child Protection Team, the Duke Primate Center, the American Dance Festival, Habitat for Humanity, Sunshares, and Rainbow House.

                       Why Compete?
There are many reasons. Here are just a few...

  • See how your skills and tools match up against top developers from around the globe.
  • See how other developers approach the same problem; see what works and doesn't work when the chips are down.
  • Learn about new products and new techniques it might take you years to find elsewhere.
  • Feel the warm glow of helping a charitable organization more effectively meet its goals.
  • Compete for one of the Gold Medals (1 ounce of solid gold) in the special categories INTERNET, OBJECT ORIENTED, RAD, GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE, and CLIENT/SERVER.

Opportunity For Both Competitors AND Sponsors

It's not just talented developers who benefit from these competitions, sponsors do too. If you have a database development product, tool, or add-on, the Developers Competition is an excellent place to highlight your software's capabilities. Gold, Silver, and Bronze sponsorships are available through which you can extend your products visibility to this group of elite programmers and to the community of developers who pay close attention to this event.
