DON'T DO IT. I used the migration tool back in Feb '96 and it was a complete nightmare. I got 4 hours into the migration and errors started appearing; I don't recall the errors ... too long ago. When I contacted Oracle support (Australia) that told me that they no longer recommend using the tool and do not support it's use.

In the end I completely purged $ORACLEHOME, installed 7.2.?.? from scratch and Imported my Export file. With all the other problems I had the whole process took me about 60 hours over the course of 4 days ... thank God for caffine.

Also, ensure that the /tmp directory is AT LEAST the minimum suggested by the doco (about 20Mb from memory). DON'T use the environment variable approach, as suggested by the doco, to point to a different directory ... it doesn't work either. If you use the environment var you will get more warnings and error messages, loose a lot of time (I lost 6 hours), and you'll have to start from scratch.
