Yes, but most folks only have to sign a inventions/trade-secret agreement; the non-compete clauses are sort of rare, and more typical of senior management positions.

As the story unfolds, it appears that the 11 that left were disgruntled about the lack of interest by Informix' senior management in their plans. One report has them approaching Microsoft before Oracle.
