Rollback Segments and Multiple Inserts

Greetings:

A group of DBA's were meeting recently in Arlington, VA and there arose a question that they asked me to pose to this list.

Exactly what role does the rollback segment play in a transaction that is inserting thousands of rows in a single table with no intervening commits?

Additionally, is there a difference between this scenario and one in which SQLLOAD is used to REPLACE rows in a given table?
