How about Borland's Delphi. It is easy to program like VB with the speed of C. Supposedly, the yet unrealesed version will have tighter integration with C++.

Some down sides:
1. Hard to find programmers. Although training in this language should be relatively easy.
2. Restricted to Windows based apps. No UNIX version. 3. Some quirky behaviour that is sometimes difficult to trace. Probably no more quirky than any other language, though.
