Printing ASCII text stored in a LONG field

What I have is a long field in a table that contains ASCII text. What I need to do is access the ASCII text using SQL*Plus. What I get currently using "SELECT field FROM table" is the hex codes representing the ASCII text in the field.

I know that there must be a way to do this. A function, some PL/SQL perhaps? Please help as the deadline for this rapidly approaches.
