What would be nice, if you are worried about security on the wire, is if someone has an SQL implimentation that uses SSL. Using this, proper firewalling, proper passwords, and (assuming the server is on unix) tcp wrappers I would be fairly comfortable for everything up to about US Govt style Classified. Much beyond that and it is time to unhook from the internet.
