Of course there is. For one, enable the detection of dead sessions by placing the parameter SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME = 10 in the SQLNET.ORA file on the client. This will enable dead connection detection. Also place the parameter in the SQLNET.ORA file on the server or where the TNS LISTENER resides. To allow timeouts you can alter the user's profile to set a limit for idle connect time, CPU usage, etc. Also in the the SQL Windows application, try accessing the tables in SHARED READ MODE or SHARED UPDATE MODE.
