We are using Oracle 7.1.3.* and are concidering to skip 7.2 to 7.3. This locking behaviour is currently pain in the neck. Doesn't help much yet to see how nicely it changes, if you look at Oracle7 Server Application Developer's Guide (Dec. 1992): chapter 6 figure 6-4, and then compare the picture with a newer version.
It changes in 7.2 (or was it even 7.1.6.something)
