Oracles locking is better - than what?

Basically it comes down to designing for the database you are using - dont believe anyone who says you can treat databases transparently.

For a given amount (within a factor of 10) of tuning effort, Sybase will walk over Oracle for performance.

Pre System 11 I converted an Oracle system to Sybase and spent an hour tuning the system. An Oracle consultant had spent 3 dys tuning his version.

Sybase supported 5 times the workload of Oracle - and thats before XI came along.
