Well, of course, like most DBA's, I was drawn to that career option because that allowed me to help more people at a time...

But seriously, in my case it just arose from smaller decisions along the way. As a junior member of staff I found that Computer Graphics were already covered but they needed someone to cover a hierarchical Database system called System 2000. My role at that center already included installing and supporting various commercial software and so I just started installing and supporting database management systems too.
