Standby Database: How??

Hi,

I would like to know how one places a "standy database" in permanent recover mode,
that is a database runining oracle 7.2 (prior to 7.3) on an HP-UX.

In addition how would one go about applying archived log files from the live database
periodically using say a cron script. The archived log files of the live database are
accessible on the standby machine as an NFS mounted filesystems
