Date today question

Does anyone know how I can get the system date and insert it into a date filed I'm using a bourne shell and calling sqlplus. the insert statement looks like this

insert into tablename (date_field) values (??????);

I'm looking for a function call like date('today') or to_date('today') or something similar to place in the command above where the ????? are.
