I have been having the same problem. It is true that Oracle does not support 16 bit SQL*net when using SPX as the transport protocol. My organization has been running this configuration without any major problems. The only problem we have run into is longer connect times (maybe 20% slower) and disconnect times (upto 60 seconds).
