Discussion was on Oracle hanging while doing a 'shutdown immeditate' and most people suggested doing a shutdown 'abort' and then restarting to allow Oracle to do backout and finally shutting down to do the cold backup.

You might also try writing a UNIX script to 1) alter the database into restricted session to prevent anyone new sessions from connecting then 2) kill all Oracle 'user' processes, and after giving Oracle a few minutes to back out any updaters that were running then 'shutdown'.

I have had to do several more than a few 'shutdown abort' commands and 99.5% of the time Oracle bounces right up, but that one time in 200 can be a real nightmare.

Just food for thought.
