Problem with SQL*PLUS Text I-O

One of the application developers is attempting to insert a string from editor into his command line. He gets the following errors:

	ORA-06550
	PLS-00201
	ORA-06550

He believes it to be a text i/o problem. I'm familiar with text i/o on other products but not on SQL*PLUS. Any thoughts? Environment: Windows95 Client, SQL*PLUS 3.1, DB server: Data General

        Oracle 7.1.6
