The instructor was probably referring to when you make your sga so large that there is not enough space to keep active pages in memory. Programs and even the sga can begin to page/swap out. What is the right size/setting for the sga on any given configuration, that’s the $64,000.00 question. You need to balance the OS and Oracle. If you have the time, monitor paging using sar or vmstat before, during, and after you enlarge the sga. The Oracle7 Server Tuning manual provides rules, from an Oracle perspective, on when to increase the various parts of the sga.
