Help with control Files

I have gotten an "Inconsistant control files" error. I don't remember the number. To fix this I copied the one with the latest UNIX date over the other copies. Was this the wrong thing to do? After I did this I started getting datafile needs recovery errors. I am running in NOARCHIVEMODE. If I recreate the control files, will this cure my ills?
