Charles,

You better not NFS mount your datafiles. It's ok to NFS mount the oracle software tree, but the problem w/ NFS mounted datafiles is that there is now way to guarantee that what's actually written to the files is what the kernal thinks has been written. If you system has a lot of io, problems will surface.

That being said, I have an instance which I use exclusively to gather stats about other instances etc. This "personal" instance uses a couple of NFS mounted datafiles, and it's ok -- but I'm the only user, and I know that what I'm doing isn't supported -- it's an acceptable risk for my purposes.
