The other thing that is important to note. 1. Cold Backups - Always take the complete database - including REDO and Control Files.
2. Online Backup - Take the Control Files -- but -- do not take
the online redos. When recovering the information that was in
the online redos is not valid. Do indeed switch logfiles as part
of the online backup - and - insure that all archive files are
saved.
Note - if you take the online redos - and - actually restore
them - you could corrupt your database.
Please read the Oracle Backup and Recovery handbook for details
on why this is bad.
