With 7.3 you can go up to 16K. With DEC unix (64 bit) you can do 32K. Those are the limits. You would prefer to use large blocks sizes on databases which do lots of sequential I/O and bulk loading. For high transaction systems, block sizes of 4K or 8K are more effective.
