I haven't had any serious trouble using Sybase or Informix On-line on "big" platforms (suppose you mean UNIX ...;-) ) either. It's more a question of personal taste than performance really... I don't swear to either of Sybase, Informix or Oracle, but all of them have worked out really well on systems at approx. 2000 clients size ! But if you're into *LARGE* computing, I wouldn't even consider using UNIX or NT. Try DB2/ESA under MVS, connected to the clients via DDCS/2 or ODBC+MicroDecisionware SNA Gateway. Refering to IBM such a client/superserver system would manage some 10,000 users without problems. It's not cheap ( ;-) ), but if one looks at the costs per user it's probably cheaper than most UNIX/NT/OS2 systems. Swedish Social Security Board (RFV) adopted this technology for a large pension fund system, since it was far more powerful than 440 Sybase SQL Servers under AIX (!).
