Thanks to everyone for your input. Here's what I've learnt: v$sqltext is missing in 7.1.3's catalog.sql and was included in later versions of Oracle - say 7.1.6 and higher. Although you can't describe v$sqltext in sql*plus, you can certainly select from it. You can describe it in SQL*DBA as sql*dba is a special tool that has access to more than the data dictionary.

I shall now endeavour to create the view based on 7.2's catalog.sql (7.2 for unix of course as it will never come to vms :-( )
