Ok for

	c.d.o.server
	c.d.o.client
	c.d.o.sql
	c.d.o.misc (*not* catch-all)

Also, remember that all the charter for the new newsgroups is to be posted to news.announce.newgroups and that all further discussion has to be carried out in news.groups *only*. I, for one, do not read regularly that group (in fact, my news server doesn't provide the news hierarchy :), so all voters should be prepared to subscribe to AND read news.* in order to partecipate in the RFD, CFV etc etc.

The rationale behind new newsgroups is that the subject is far too wide to be handled as a single newsgroup AND that people will behave correctly and won't crosspost to the whole comp.databases.oracle.* hierarchy.

In fact, experience tell us this is not true - let's be optimistic - and crossposts are 5 out of 10 articles. Look what REGULARLY happens to comp.infosystems.www.*.* groups. So, splitting and having a newsgroup hierarchy too detailed and crosspost is a loss (see also WOMBAT). Also, I can't understand why this audience wants to split c.d.o, but still keep the catch-all group. Hey, do you really want to split, or not ?

What the discussion here seem to miss is that splitting a newsgroup is not only a matter of the readers of that group. In fact, as the whole USENET community is affected by the new system- and disk- load that a split is likely to cause, you should not be surprised that the NO votes could well exceed the YES count. This is especially true (my opinion only) if

  1. you split in more than, say, 5 different subgroups
  2. you stick with the idea of the catch-all group

Except when you look the other way.
