Performance when using long raws ??

Hi !

We're experimenting with using an oracle database to store the various documents (MS-word, MS-Project etc.) we produce.

To achieve this we place the documents in a long raw field.

However performance is not what we would like it to be - saving a 1 MB document takes approx 1 min, while retrieving it takes approx 15 sec.

I have not had any luck in finding anything in the manuals about performance tuning specifically for long raws, so any input as to how performance could be improved (apart from bying faster disks and a bigger machine) will be appreciated. For instance does the insert/select 'clean out' the database buffer cache, and would a bigger DBC help ???

The hardware in question is an HP 800 E35 server running HP-UX 9. Software is Oracle v 7.1.6 and sql*net 2.1.

Our LAN is not the limiting factor.

So what goes ?? - is there anything to do about the performance ??

Take care !

/Jacob
