How to be able to enter flexible dates in forms 4.5

Reading the Developer/ 2000 Forms 4.5 manual gives the impression, that using a date format mask say DD.MM.YYYY for some item of type date gives some nice user features without having to add any special code. F.ex. the user can enter 01011996 (insert or query mode) and the form will expand the field content properly to 01.01.1996.

This was a feature back in Forms 3.0. and it works fine then.

Doing this in Forms 4.5 does not seem to work at all. Entering the example above 01011996 gives the result 01.11.0096.

Even prefixing the format with FM or FMFX does not help. I am running forms version 4.5.6.5.5,
and NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA_WE8ISO8859P1

Does anybody have similar experiences and hopefully solutions ?
