Someone mentioned that RAID 7 might be proprietary. Actually, Storage Computer considers RAID 7 to be fully open. The interface to RAID 7 storage servers is SCSI, a completely-SCSI-compliant implementation---not a proprietary implementation. In addition, RAID 7 storage servers are fully open regarding what disk drives can be used---there is no requirement to use vendor-supplied or -certified disk drives.

RAID 7 architecture overcomes the performance bottlenecks of the earlier RAID 5 architectures that date back to the mid-80s. That's why RAID 7 storage servers are widely used with big databases, and why Storage Computer is demonstating RAID 7 at the data warehousing show in Orlando this week.
