I have had the same problem with several Pro*C projects and have said a few choice words over it.
Let me verify my understanding of problem:
Selecting a NULL value from Oracle table then inserting back into Oracle with a retrieved date.
Try just inserting a string variable formatted correctly. I have done this previously and it was accepted as the same type as defined at the RDBMS table level.
