Parent not found error when child table contains nulls

Trying to create a foreign key constraint gets the ORA-2294, Parent keys not found error when the column in the child table contains nulls. I know I can remove the data, create the constraint & put the data back, but I think there may be an easier work-around. Anybody know one? (the child column is indexed.) Thanks.
