Don't know if this will help, but I had a problem using environemntal variables in the init.ora file. From the info below, it sounds like you are using a link between the two directories. While I have soft links working here under 7.2.2, I have had Oracle support insist that all paths in the init.ora must be "physical".

The other problem I've seen involves permission differences between the parents to the two directories involved. In your case, it looks like the /u/g/oracle/7.1 permissions for all directories in the path is set up correctly. However, you haven't shown us the permissions looking at /amd /amd/oracle and /amd/oracle/7.1 (the last should be the same by virtue of being the same inode). The problem may be permissions at the /amd or /amd/oracle level rather than the path you have shown. This problem has bitten me in the past (and probably will again in the future)!
