I have wondered the same thing. I even asked Oracle but got an inconclusive answer--something like "maybe it's compiled binary code". But that doesn't explain it, since the size variations are greater than the generated .fmx file size. I would still like to hear Oracle give a definitive answer on this.  

I use a method of copying everything over from the big form to a new form and then saving. This creates a small and clean .fmb file. I posted the procedure yesterday under the thread titled "Something odd in my Forms 4.5." If you can't find it, ask and I'll email it.
