The Operational Data Store is an architectural construct that is:

  subject oriented
  integrated (i.e., collectively integrated)   volatile
  current valued
  contains only corporate data

(from Inmon, W.H.; Imhoff, Claudia; Battas, Greg. Building the  Operational Data Store. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1995)

The ODS is like a data warehouse in that is constructed from a number of source databases. The main difference is that it is allowed to be updated in normal operation. The challenge is to propagate updates between the ODS and the operational source databases.

The best source of information is the above book, Inmon's book Using the Data Warehouse, or from some of the articles he writes for various database journals.

Hope this helps.
