Are triggers synchronous?

Hi,
imagine this scenario: A trigger is started on insertion of a row. That trigger takes "a lot of time" to execute its code. During that execution, the inserted row is updated, which causes the same trigger to execute again.
Is the row locked while the trigger executes? Do triggers execute synchronously/sequentially? What happens?
E-mail replies appreciated!
