If you are using Oracle on a Unix box and your block size is 2048, the maximum number of extents that a segment can aquire is 121. If you are getting anywhere near this many extents, you should export, drop, and recreate the object with a larger initial/next extent specified. In a pinch, when the extents are getting high and you don't want to run out, alter the next extent size to a very large value.
