Do you have a working C makefile for Sun OS 4.1?

I am having a devil of a time compiling some c programs on a Sun Sparc laptop with Sun OS 4.1. I can precompile clean, but then get an error '*Initialization* assert invalid token-sequence'. I've tried using the gcc and cc compilers... if you have any experience with this problem, your help would be greatly appreciated. I get this message on every C program I try to compile.
