There are fonts available that will make the task fairly easy. If you use Code 39 a checksum is not required; other code symbologies, such as Code 128, generally require a checksum, but that takes just a small bit of code.

If you are in a Windows environment, TrueType fonts work nicely. If you can't use TrueType but are printing to a Hewlett-Packard or compatible PCL-5 printer you can download a bit-mapped barcode font.
