Sorry for the simpleness of this question, but I've been having a real problem with respect to creating a new database. I was wondering (hoping) someone could point out the obvious thing that I am overlooking.

setup: Oracle7.1 (trial copy) running on a pc loaded with Windows NT workstation.

scenario:
I go and startup the database that Oracle installs during setup (if I don't start it sql plus won't work). Next I start sql plus (I've logged in as both sys and under an account that I created). I've issued the command:

create database aname controlprofile reuse

and get the message that I have insufficient privelege. Poking through the online help, I understand the OSDBA role must be enabled, but I don't know where to enable it. I've gone into the user manager and assigned all the roles to the sys account. OSDBA is not one of the available roles. Other sql functions including create table or drop table work okay, I just can't seem to create a database.

Thanks for taking the time to read this rather basic request. I've spent a couple hours trying to nut this "simple" problem out and figured it was about time to ask for help. Received on Thu Oct 26 1995 - 00:00:00 CET
