ORACLE_SID question

thought this may be a good place to find out the answer to my question:
Oracle databases are accessed by the user processes through SID. As far as I understand a pipe is created to connect the user process and server process. is this a named pipe (FIFO) identified by the SID? if it is, where is the node for this pipe created?
