Need help recovering SYSTEM tablespace

Hi,



I reloaded my SYSTEM tablespace data file from tape, and it is now OFFLINE. I 
tried to issue the 'recover tablespace SYSTEM' command, but it twlls me that 
the database must be open. I issued the 'alter database open' command, and it 
complains about the offline tablespace. I am obviously doing something wrong. 
Help!!
