boilerplate is an overloaded term that applies to any situation where you are laying down a basic element upon which to build or fill in details. that is, you can boilerplate a stub of code, or boilerplate a function body, or boilerplate a schema. the term boilerplate is literal for the material used to make the container or outter shell of a boiler. it probably got commandeered, like bottom-line, or kludge did from other disciplines to short-hand a complex description. the logic may follow, but i am sure there is not official link, that since a boilerplate is a shell into which steam will flow, that you are starting with a container and later filling it with details.
