Catherine,
I run a consultancy specializing in Oracle and Oracle Financials.
We place consultants (many of whom are independent) into contracts all over the States. In answer to your question about pay ranges... it depends!
Pay rates tend to vary state to state and of course with experience level. Rates tend to go from a minimum of around $40 per hour (for a reasonably experienced programmer) to... well almost anything. Rates in the $50's $60's and $70's are not unusual. Specialized skills (such as Financials or DBA) obviously get more...
I believe you can get a better rate by working through a consultancy like ours (although I admit I am biased <G>) but that means you have to accept that someone else will earn off the hours you work. Commission rates range between15% to 25% of the total billing rate. The advantage of using a firm to market you tends to be a better choice of contracts available resulting in little, if any, downtime between contracts whilst you tie down the next contract. It's also nice to know someone else will worry about getting your money in/contracts etc...
BEWARE though... some agencies simply network to other agencies (quite long chains can be built!) and they all want a slice of the pie... a good firm should be prepared to tell you how much the client is paying for your time... you should get the lions share of that!
It is also not great if the agency insists on exclusivity on your services...
I am sure there are other gotchas waiting out there, but consulting can be very rewarding and interesting.... good luck with it!
