Retail POS Systems....Query

A friend of mine recently installed a 4 terminal POS system (IBM Compat) which uses bar code scanners and cash drawers etc. For inventory management, wholesale/ retail mgt.

The database software that came with it is highly inadequate and he is now looking to find out whether there are windows-based POS databases available that can also be flexible enough to modify when required?
