Abbreviations are only a problem where each developer on the project makes up their own abbreviations as they go along, bewildering everone else. If you establish a project wide list of abbreviations for use in column / table / variable names it saves on the amount of typing (and reduces typos ). It also helps ensure consistent use of abbreviations in variable names between programs, and let's face it, no matter what the standards say, variable names are made up on the fly.
