SQL*Plus Copy Command Question

I have encountered a problem with using the copy command in SQL*Plus in Oracle v7.0. I get an error in trying to copy data between identical tables in two databases. These tables have not null constraints for several columns. In my source table some rows for these not null varchar2 columns contain a value of a space. The SQL*Plus copy command interprets these as null. Then the copy fails with an error message saying that a mandatory attribute is missing or null during insert. Is there a way around this problem?
