hmmm...it should all work fine...the error message would indicate to me that somehow or another, that control file was copied over with the database being down, or that the destination machine has for some reason opened an instance with that control file already. You also should make sure the the original db is shutdown properly (ie, no shared mem is left floating around, etc.)

from a doability perspective, moving a cold copy of a database from one machine to another machine should work fine (i've done it many times, though not exactly going from HP-UX 9.0 to 10.0) and it looks like you've done everything correctly from the info you gave above.
