yes and no...Oracle doesn't know how to do instance recovery when a tablespace is in hotbackup mode because it's possible that it needs archive logs to do that recovery. So when the database crashed in the middle of a hotbackup, the DBA will need to issue the recover database command and (possibly) point the db to the place where the needed archive logs are.
