That is not complete true. You can not recover an individual database objects. However, you can perform database recovery at several levels: the 'lowest' level is at the datafile level. The 'highest' level is recover the whole database. But definitely, you don't have to restore the whole database as long as you have ARCHIVELOG mode enable and still have your archived redo logs.
