The access path used by Oracle under rule based optimization is based on a set of precedence rule as documented in Chapter 13 of server concepts manual.

According to which PATH 10 that is Bounded Range Search on indexed columns is available when the where clause contains condition that uses either the column of a single column index or one or more column that make up the leaing portion of a composite index.

So composite indexes can be used by where clauses that refer to the leading portion. Received on Tue Aug 22 1995 - 00:00:00 CEST
