Come on, frust! It's not that bad. There really is a body of knowledge that a DBA has to have in order to function effectively, but few people know what's in it, so they do one of two things: (1) they say there is no such body of knowledge and anyone can do the job, or (2) they pick the closest job they can think of (programmer) and say you need lots of experience in it.

You'll have a much better understanding of the qualifications one needs to be a DBA when you first ask what a DBA does.
